Summer G. Shelverton Elected to Fellowship of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC)

Summer G. Shelverton, a partner in Cades Schutte’s Trusts & Estates Department, was recently elected to the Fellowship of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC). She is one of 35 Fellows that were elected throughout the U.S. in 2023 and joins a national nonprofit association comprised of approximately 2,400 peer-elected lawyers and law professors nationally and abroad.

According to ACTEC, its Fellows are lawyers that, “must have at least ten years of experience in the active practice of trust and estate law, as fiduciary counsel with a fiduciary services company, or a combination thereof, or be a full-time teacher of law at a duly accredited law school, specialize in teaching trust and estate law, and have at least ten years cumulative experience as a lawyer in active private trust and estate practice or as a teacher of trust and estate law, or a combination thereof. Lawyers and law professors are elected to be Fellows based on their outstanding reputation, exceptional skill, and substantial contributions to the field by lecturing, writing, teaching, and participating in bar leadership or legislative activities. It is their aim to improve and reform probate, trust and tax laws, procedures, and professional responsibility.”

Summer’s practice focuses on the areas of estate planning, probate and trust administration, conservatorship and guardianship proceedings, and trust and estate disputes. She also assists clients with international estate planning issues, including investing in U.S. real property and pre-immigration planning. She is a member of the Hawaii Estate Planning Council and has served as former chair of both the Probate and Estate Planning Section and the Elder Law Section of the Hawaii State Bar Association. She recently served as part of the drafting committee for Hawai‘i’s new Uniform Trust Code, which facilitated enactment of the Uniform Trust Code in Hawai‘i.
